A Historic District and National Landmark, since 1955 and 1962 respectively, Beacon Hill is home to the Massachusetts State House and borders the Boston Commons. It is protected in such a way that the Beacon Hill Architectural Commission meets on the third Thursday of each month to review any changes to its buildings’ exteriors- subject to strict rules and regulations. It was truly developed at the turn of the 19th century, and to this day is characterized by its Federal Style architecture. It was originally named after a former Beacon that was used to warn against invasions in 1634.
